Learn how to make your very own ceramic mug using clay slabs!
Join us on Friday, January 31st from 6:30-9pm for a colorful pottery workshop and learn the traditional craft of slab-built ceramics. This 2.5hr class is designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike, guiding you through the process of creating a unique ceramic mug from start to finish. Each mug will hold about 10oz. of your favorite beverage or ice cream 😉
Workshop Overview:
We'll begin with an overview of slab construction, a versatile technique in ceramics. Your instructor, Helen, will demonstrate how to cut out the pieces for the mug’s walls, base, and handle. You’ll use templates and tools to achieve clean edges and the correct dimensions for your design.
Assembling Your Mug: Learn the crucial techniques of scoring and slipping to join the clay pieces securely. Helen will guide you through the steps to ensure your mug’s walls are perfectly aligned and the handle is sturdy.
Painting and Glazing: After a brief drying period, unleash your creativity with vibrant underglazes. Paint your mug in colors and patterns of your choice, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
Once your creations are complete we will handle all of the bisque and glaze firings. We will also glaze each piece with a clear, glossy, food-safe glaze and in 3 weeks you’ll pick up your finished pieces at Studio Sumi.
Supplies Needed: None! All necessary materials, including clay, underglazes, and sculpting tools, are provided. You'll receive hands-on assistance and step-by-step instructions from Helen to help you craft a beautiful piece you’re proud of.
