In our handbuilding Jewelry Box Workshop, you’ll create a custom-made ceramic box that’s perfect for storing jewelry, keepsakes, or holiday treasures. Whether you're new to pottery or have some experience, this workshop is a creative way to dive into handbuilding and make a one-of-a-kind holiday creation that’s functional and beautiful.
What to Expect:
Hands-On Pottery: You’ll use hardened clay slabs and simple templates to trace and cut all the pieces needed for your jewelry box. Learn expert techniques like beveling and scoring-and-slipping to attach pieces seamlessly and create a sturdy, functional jewelry box.
Personalization: Design your own custom lid and handle to give your box a personalized touch. Whether you’re adding intricate patterns, fun textures, or simple embellishments, your box will reflect your unique style.
Carving Techniques: After assembling your jewelry box, you’ll explore carving techniques to decorate the exterior and make your box stand out.
Glazing and Firing: Choose a glaze color to finish your piece. We’ll take care of the firing and glazing, and your jewelry box will be ready for pick-up in 3-4 weeks—just in time for the holidays!
Supplies Needed: None! We’ll provide all the tools, clay, aprons

Why Handbuilding is Perfect for Beginners:
Handbuilding is an accessible way to start working with clay. It’s easy to learn and doesn’t require a pottery wheel, making it a fun, laid-back experience. You’ll work with your hands to shape, attach, and carve your pieces, all while getting creative and experimenting with your design. It’s the perfect introduction to pottery!
Instructor Bio:
Inspired by weekends at the flea market with her dad, Michelle has been enamored with handicrafts and shiny things since she was young. After learning how to make jewelry in high school, the obsession took off and she started her jewelry business, mjxl studio, in San Francisco. For the last 2.5 years, she has ventured into functional ceramics, making wares for the home and her business. Creating beautiful and functional pieces through playful exploration is an irreplaceable joy in her life she hopes to share with others. This creative journey has led her to Studio Sumi where she’s excited to learn by assisting with ceramic production and studio operations.

Age Requirement
The classes are paced for and primarily booked with adults, but students 16+ are allowed to sign up with guardian permission. If you have any questions about age limits, please email bri@sumiware.com.
Cancellation Policy
To request a cancellation or refund, you must email bri@sumiware.com. Refunds requested more than one week prior to the class date are fully refundable or you can reschedule to a different class. Refunds requested within one week from the class date are 50% refundable. No refunds are given within 24hrs of the start of class. Should a class not fill sufficiently, it may be cancelled 24hrs prior to the class date and full refund will be issued to those enrolled.
