Spring Kidz Pottery (Ages 7-11) - Begins April 2nd
Spark Creativity, Build Confidence, and Have Fun with Clay!
April 2nd – June 4th
If you have Spring Break March 31st-April 4th you can make up a session during our summer program 💙
Join us every Wednesday from 3:30–5:00 PM for 10 weeks of hands-on pottery fun! Designed specifically for kids ages 7-11, our after-school pottery classes provide a nurturing and engaging space where young artists can explore, experiment, and create.
With many schools in San Francisco scaling back their arts programs, we believe that every child should have access to high-quality, creative learning experiences. Our curriculum aligns with California Visual and Performing Arts Standards, ensuring that students not only express their creativity but also develop fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and artistic confidence.
Each class is led by our Studio Manager, Kat who has been teaching pottery to kids for the past year. Her educational background and deep passion for ceramics ensure that every student receives thoughtful guidance and encouragement.
To ensure personalized attention and a close-knit group dynamic, each session is limited to just 8 students.
What We’ll Do
Each week, students will explore a new technique, building on their skills while working on fun, seasonal, and functional projects. They’ll learn:
🎨 Handbuilding Techniques – Pinching, slab-building, and sculpting to create mugs, plates, bowls, and more!
🖌 Glazing & Decorating – Experiment with colorful underglazes, textures, and patterns to personalize their work.
🐾 Creative Sculptures – Encourage imagination with sculpted animals, miniatures, and playful ceramic designs.
🔥 Clay Basics – Understand the journey of clay, from soft and moldable to a finished, glazed piece after firing.
Each project integrates design, storytelling, and problem-solving, making every session a blend of education and creativity.

1. What happens if my child misses a class?
We understand that sometimes things come up, and your child might miss a class. While we can't offer make-up classes due to the small group size and structured curriculum, we'll make sure your child can catch up on any missed projects or lessons during the following session. Additionally, we’ll provide any necessary materials or instructions to complete projects at home if possible.
This Spring session does occur during Spring Break for some of our families so we will offer a make-up class for those who are away during that week. Please give us advance notice so that we can make the proper arrangements.
2. What should my child bring to the class?
Your child doesn't need to bring anything special to class—all materials and tools will be provided. We do recommend sending them in comfortable, easy-to-clean clothing that you don't mind getting a bit messy. We also suggest packing a small snack and water bottle to keep them energized during the session.
3. Is previous experience in pottery or art required?
No prior experience is necessary! Our after-school classes are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all skill levels. Whether your child is a budding artist or completely new to pottery, they'll receive personalized guidance to help them succeed and enjoy the process.
4. How do I sign up for the classes, and what is the payment process?
Signing up is easy! You can register your child through our website, www.sumiware.com. Once you’ve chosen the session you’d like to enroll in, you can complete the payment securely online. We accept all major credit cards. Remember, spots are limited to 8 students per session, so we recommend registering early!
5. What kind of projects will my child be working on?
Your child will explore a variety of hand-building and sculptural techniques throughout the session. They'll create projects like slab-built mugs, pinch pots, animal sculptures, pencil holders—all while incorporating elements of play and art therapy. Each project is designed to be both fun and educational, allowing your child to express their creativity while learning new skills.
